12 - 12 - 2011 Seniors alerted of letter charging a fee for state program
In an effort to prevent older residents from paying for a service that is available to them for free, Rep. Kerry Benninghoff is warning local senior citizens to be wary of a letter they may receive from a non-government agency about applying for the Commonwealth’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate program. The letter comes from an entity calledf the “Senior Advisory Center.” It offers to help senior citizens apply for the program for a $39 fee. While there apparently is nothing illegal about the company or the letter offering to provide the service, Benninghoff doesn’t want senior citizens to mistakenly believe that they must pay in order to apply for the state program’s benefits. Applications for the rebate are available at Benninghoff's office in Reedsville & information is available by calling 667-2319.
