09 - 30 - 2011 Reading & Math skills still below par in local schools
(LS) It's the benchmark by which schools are measured for academic success. The Adequate Yearly Progress, or the AYP. And in schools that have large numbers of poor students, the AYP scores are noticably lower. Such is the case for Mifflin & Juniata Co. Schools. The 2010-11 AYP scores for 4 Mifflin Co. schools did not reach the required AYP goal of 67% in math & 72% in reading. In Juniata Co., there were 3 schools that did not meet the goals & 2 local schools did not meet the building standards. These goals will increase next year to 78% in math & 81% in reading skills, increasing each year until 2014, at 100% proficiency.
