05 - 11 - 2010 Borough council trade barbs over forming police force
(LS) In last nightâs meeting of the Lewistown Borough Council, comparisons were made on how a vote would look to form a borough police force if various council members were to die. The exchange started over the decision to have an ordinance in place by June 14th to form a police force that would place former MCRPD Chief William Herkert as the chief of the borough force. Councilman Nelson Rieffannacht questioned whether the board had "concrete information" on the costs when the borough pulls out of the agreement with the MCRPD. Mayor Bargo replied the borough had requested information from the MCRPD 3 times but has had no reply. Rieffannacht accused the council of withholding information which brought a response from Councilman Gregg O'Donnell saying there were no "secret meetings" by council members saying that "Unless three of us pass away, we've already made our decision." Rieffannacht retorted by comparing the vote if other council members were to die. Councilman Frank Berrier then spoke up telling Rieffannacht "And if you die it becomes 5-1."
