05 - 11 - 2010 Fuel tanker flips & catches fire near Beaver Springs
(DI) The driver of a tanker carrying 8,500 gallons of gasoline & diesel fuel down Shade Mountain in western Snyder Co. was badly burned yesterday after the brakes gave out, & the truck rolled off the road. The driver, 34-y/o Timothy Bussard of Manchester, MD, was flown by helicopter to the Lehigh Valley Hospital burn unit. The accident happened on Rt. 235 in Spring Twp., Snyder Co., about a mile north of US 522. State police say Bussard lost his brakes when on a steep part of the road & couldn't make it around a turn. The tanker truck turned on its side & slid about 60 ft. on its side, before leaving the road, striking a utility pole & coming to rest in a small stream upside down. The tank began to leak, then caught fire, but no explosions occurred. The fire spread to the creek, underneath a culvert pipe, across the road & into a hill of trees. A number of trees & wires came down as a result of the fire. The fire burned for about 2 hours, & Rt. 235 was expected to be closed until noon today.
