05 - 01 - 2014 Man sentenced in DUI deaths will not get a new trial
[LS] - In a ruling recently made by Senior Judge Rick Williams, convicted killer Carl D. Briggs will get a new trial. Currently, the 44-y/o Briggs is serving a 6-to-12 year sentence at a state prison near Pittsburgh after his vehicular homicide conviction in 2013. In that conviction, he was also sentenced for involuntary manslaughter in the deaths of 64-y/o Bruce Kauffman and 63-y/o Judy Kauffman near McVeytown. Brigg's attorney had filed a post-sentencing motion with the court requesting a new trial on the grounds his client's constitutional rights may have been violated. The court, however, didn't accept that argument but found that the evidence presented at trial was enough to uphold his conviction.
