01 - 07 - 2014 Wind chill warnings and a deep freeze close schools today
[CDT] - Central PA was cloaked with dangerous cold last night, bringing subzero temperatures and a bitter wind chill. By yesterday afternoon, calls began coming in from school districts that had announced that they would be closed today. Mifflin County, Juniata County, Greenwood and Mount Union Area school districts will be closed today as will all schools in Centre Co. The National Weather Service in State College issued a wind chill warning until 7am tomorrow with temperatures expecting to drop as low as 5 degrees below zero last nigh, warming up to a mere 6 degrees today. Tonight, temperatures will fall to 2 degrees and tomorrow, warm up to just below freezing for the dayâs high. But the real story is the wind. Wind chill is the actual temperature combined with the wind, which creates a colder feel and speeds the rate of heat loss from an exposed person. The wind chill today is expected to reach 20 to 30 degrees below zero.
