05 - 16 - 2012 Raw milk health advisory issued for dairy farm
(CDT) The state departments of Agriculture & Health issued an advisory yesterday urging consumers to discard any ice cream bought May 5 at Spring Bank Acres, a 75-acre dairy farm near Rebersburg, Centre Co. They produced a batch of ice cream mix to which raw milk had been added after pasteurization. Dutch Valley Bakery & BBQ in Penn Twp. then used the mix to create “pasteurized” ice cream, posing a potential food safety risk. A Department spokeswoman said it appears Dutch Valley Bakery bought the mix believing it was completely pasteurized. After the department heard about the ice cream mix batch in question, a food safety sanitarian did an inspection at the farm last weekend & confirmed that raw milk mistakenly had been added. She said that they are "thinking it was an oversight”.
