05 - 16 - 2012 Union School faces closure in 2013
(LS) When the Mifflin Co. School Board voted to close 5 school to cut costs last year, Union Elementary in Belleville was spared. However, with the district still facing a $1.6 million budget deficit for the coming year, board members are facing the inevitable. Closing the school & moving the 85 students to Indian Valley Elementary would save the district upwards of $200,000/yr. Union would ultimately need nearly $2 million worth of renovations & with renovation work happening at Indian Valley Elementary, there would be adequate space for the extra students. Superintendent James Estep will discuss the budget tonight & the board could vote on the Union decision at its May 24th meeting.
