05 - 08 - 2012 J.-Co. Commissioners weigh options on prison closing
(LS) In last night's Juniata Co. Commissioners meeting in Mifflintown, discussion focused on a looming decision on closing the count's prison. The facility was constructed in 1833 & its condition was described by Judge Kathy Morrow as "horrendous". HOwever Morrow, along with some board membes & many county residents, is expressing reservations on the prison closing. Acting interim prison warden & county commissioner, Teresa O'Neal, has said she would step down as warden in July & that closing the prison would save the county about $617,000 annually. The prison currently houses about 30 inmates & employs 21 workers.
